1. Edinburgh

If you can visit only one city in Scotland, make it the country’s capital Edinburgh. It is home to well-preserved architecture from different periods of history, including medieval times (such as Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile), to the more recent New Town area, mostly built in the 18th century. In this newer part of the ancient city, you should simply wander among the many elegant Georgian townhomes, take in the attractive pedestrian-friendly public square Grassmarket, which is famous for its galleries, shops, and cafés.

This city is also an important cultural destination with numerous popular events and festivals taking place throughout the year. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of the world’s largest arts festivals, draws huge crowds, as do the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the former is held on the grounds of the castle.

2. Glasgow

Situated on the River Clyde on the west coast of Scotland, in the last few decades, Glasgow has become a major European cultural center. With it’s a lot of excellent art galleries, museums, and festivals, this city attracts tourists year-round. Thanks to its lovely parks and pedestrian-friendly streets, Glasgow is a great city to explore on foot.

Glasgow is also famous for other cultural activities. Highlights for theater fans include taking in a play at the King’s Theatre, partake in a little opera in the Theatre Royal, or a classical concert at the Concert Hall.
